Dress for Success
What does God wear? Â In Isaiah 59 we get a peak into his wardrobe. Â He’s preparing for battle – and like any good soldier he’s fitting himself with armor.
59:17 He put on righteousness as his body armor
and placed the helmet of salvation on his head.
He clothed himself with a robe of vengeance
and wrapped himself in a cloak of divine passion.
Earlier, in Isaiah 11, we find the picture of the coming Messiah – the Savior – of God also donning gear to take on malevolent forces.
11:5 He will wear righteousness like a belt
and truth like an undergarment.
Pretty awesome designer fashion.
But what is really incredible, what blows my mind, is that under Jesus, the Messiah, we have access to God’s wear.
6:11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For wet are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.t 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.t 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Beautiful. Â Empowering. Â Dangerous. Â If we have the chance to enlist in God’s ranks to overturn injustice and engage in spiritual warfare, we need his gear. Â It’s an amazing thing that we have a role to play in the grandest project this world has ever known!
