We’ve all been there.

Look back over your life and remember the last time you fully experienced passion - something that caught your heart by surprise, gave you purpose – a sense of mission and higher calling. Put that feeling of conviction and excitement in your mind? Okay – good, read on…

Now, if you can, think back to the moment when that passion was first doubted. When did you go from pure certitude to…maybe an unmet expectation, or conflicting evidence of how you understood how things should work? When, after receiving that divine sense of calling, did you run up against someone of importance in your life who disagreed with you or even sought to stop you in your tracks? Maybe it was a parent subtly but condescendingly pushing you away from your intended college major and into something they wanted for you. Maybe it was a boss dismissing your dreams for the future of your business as misguided.

How did you respond to that first bite of doubt? That sting of original uneasiness with your own beliefs?

Hebrews 11:24 –

By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27†By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.

What happens to a person who has seen “him who is invisible?” For Moses, it was after 40 years of shame and isolation, away from his Israelite family, exiled from Egypt — an exiled prince! — he had every right to be in the royal family, but he has a passion - he had a reason to buck the trend…

…and it cost him all the status quo due him in life, but that made all the difference.

He was not focused on the anger of the king, on the doubt of his Egyptian subordinates, or his Israelite brothers, sisters, cousins… He was fixed on the passion, the original passion that found him in the wilderness – he had such a sense of his own calling, of his own intimacy with that calling, that nothing and no one would stir his fear or doubt.

We all go through life with a web of convictions – some stronger than others. As we learn more about the world and how it works, certain strands in the web are broken, new ones are formed (i.e. as a child, we learn that we cannot fly when we jump off the stairs in a cape). This process continues all throughout life, and its an important part of building a cohesive sense of TRUTH in the world.

But what strands CAN’T be broken? Are they all susceptible to pressures from the outside – from the wind and debris that inevitably blows through our fragile webs? I feel that I want to be stronger than that – on certain things – I am learning what those things are – and resolving myself to those certain strands help me allow less important strands to be let go of – opening my heart and mind further to the truth of things.

Its all about becoming passionate about the right strands in your web – choose wisely, and you’ll have passion your whole life long.

Walking through Chicago, you see parents interacting with their kids all the time. Walking down sidewalks, playing at parks, on the train, pushing strollers and wearing baby-wraps. Kids being rewarded, and being disciplined. Parenting styles of all kinds are on full display – some styles absolutely baffle me, others make me cringe…but there are times when you see a partent engage a child in such a way that it inspires not only the kid, but all watching, to live a better life.

Many parents love their children, but few parents know how to put that love into constructive action. What I mean is, sometimes we think we’re loving a child when we’re actually harming her. Love is not as simple as a kiss on the cheek or handing them 50 candy-bars a day just to appease their wishes.

Not being a parent myself, I can not assume I would be any different than countless well-meaning parents in Chicago – and my heart goes out to folks doing the most important work in the world, raising up the next generation. It IS the most important work…which is why this question must be asked…

What does Love do?

I look to the perfect picture of familial love – the Father God and his Son Jesus Christ. Review the Gospels to find what the most beautiful, ultimate parenting skills look like in action. Re-read the Gospels with the eyes of how God ‘parented’ Jesus, and you may find that the Love of the Father sends his Son into Mission.

I’ve seen some parents walking down the street with their two-year-old running about 20 feet behind them, frantically trying to keep up; I’ve seen other parents let their kids shoot ahead of them unawares, running at full-speed toward busy streets, and still others keep their kids on leashes, never leaving them out of their reach (with literal leashes~ or a GPS on their teen’s cell phone)!

Watch the Father keep his Son intimately close for years, teaching him who He is and Whose He is. At twelve years old, Jesus has a better grip on his identity and his mission than most adult Christian leaders. Speaking to his earthly parents, who had LOST HIM at a city-festival, found him in the Temple, and Jesus’ pre-teenage voice, cracking as he plainly said, “Why are you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be where my Father’s work is!” Potent — both intimacy and mission wrapped into one sentence…(Lk 2:48-50)

As Jesus’ life progressed, he was sent out as the Light of the World, doing incredible work and breaking through the hardest barrier in the Universe – the human heart. Even still, as a Good Father, God was ever-present and affirming of his Son, attuning regularly with Jesus in times of intimate prayer and communion.

And it is in fact, the same relationship God hopes for all those chasing after the Jesus-Way. We have a real opportunity to be “Fathered by God” – to find our true identity, and our true purpose and mission in life. There are enough voices vying for our hearts and our dollars in this culture – it will take focus and intentionality to be fathered by God, but its worth it – not just for your own life, but for your children’s.

This week is an exciting one. Our house church network here in Chicago is having “twins!”

Over the last year a simple church has been meeting in our home for prayer, communion, fellowship and scheming up the Kingdom of God in our city. It was born out of a desire to be the church…the church we want to see in the world. It was nothing earth-shattering, it but it was always real. This last year I’ve seen people in our house church grow leaps and bounds – learning to trust in God, to hear his voice, to share their true selves with brothers and sisters. And they’ve learned to seek out their purpose and mission.

Over the last few months, several in our group have felt the call to take a step of faith and plant a church in a new context, opening up more living room space to new faces, new hearts.

It was not something we imposed on folks, not something we pressured people in our group to do – it was talked about and dreamed about – but these two churches seem to have been born organically – from a continual stance of listening to the Holy Spirit on the next steps for our community.

One church had its first gathering on Monday night, the second was last night (Wednesday). Both are beautiful, fragile, yet complete pictures of the Bride of Christ. I am so thankful and proud to be a part of the church family emerging all the time here in Chicago. These two new churches, like all the others in our church network, will be able to reach out to people far from God – which is what its really all about. It reminds me of how families grow to include new people, to leave the nest and venture out into new territory!

It is beyond any one person – it is a people movement… it is a God movement!
